COMMUNITY: Bushwick Five Points Festival

Posted in Community posts with tags , , , , , , on June 4, 2012 by threeerincadigan

This past Saturday was an amazing day. I moved into this area of Brooklyn a little over three years ago (Jefferson to the Myrtle-Wycoff on the “L” train). There was basically The North East Kingdom and Star Coffee shop. Not much else but 99cent stores and bodegas as far as the eye could see. My husband and I waited with baited breath both for Barcey’s Coffee to open a bit closer down to our place and The Bodega Bar to open right at the 5 points on St. Nicholas and Troutman. Now we got Pearls Bar, Cafe Ghia, Uri’s, and Hanna Market. Arts in Bushwick has been working hard to colonize the neighborhood as a place for artists for years. I’ve participated the past three during the Bushwick Open Studios festival. This year instead of hosting an open forum in my studio, I took part in the first year of the Bushwick Five Points festival down the block from my house. A local guy Joe whose family owns a bunch of buildings and land on the corners where St. Nich, Troutman and one small side street create a star intersection donated all his wall space to international graffiti artists. With the help of Brent, who lives in the lofts right there and Ben and Gina who own Bodega Bar on the corner, he threw an all day 10-8 FREE party for the community. Live bands and beer garden in the one open land triangle, graffiti murals being worked on all over, plenty of food trucks and local vendors. I was one of the vendors and also doing some live painting. It was gorgeous out and sunny, the streets were filled with hipsters, locals and families and plenty of Bushwick Open studio wanderers.

Design Meanings: The Duat

Posted in Design Meanings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 1, 2012 by threeerincadigan
duat egyptian door to the afterlife

The Duat

The Duat is an ancient Egyptian symbol or hieroglyph of a five pointed star surrounded by a circle. Written about in all the major funerary texts of the ancients, the Duat described the journey undertaken by the soul after death. Often times the Duat was described as a realm or an object the soul had to pass through to reach their final destination, the Lands of the Gods.  Many Egyptologists see the Duat as a symbolic reference for what happens when the pharaoh dies. Ancient alien theorist Zachariah Sitchin has this to say, “ Treating the Journey’s details in those texts as factual geographic and topographic indicators, I have concluded that the Duat was located in the central plain of the Sinai peninsula – the site of the Anunnaki’s post Diluvial spaceport.”

The ancient alien theory also believes there was a landing strip for aircraft built into the Cedar Mountains of Lebanon. Indeed there is an enormous man made, long and narrow, level place high in the mountains created out of perfectly shaped limestone blocks. The theory is that these sky gods of the ancient Egyptians used various markers both in the sky and on Earth to be able to land their craft on this “Landing Place”. What would the markers have been? Archeologists have long wondered at the purpose of the Pyramids at Giza, believing them to be tombs, yet there has been no evidence of such. These pyramids were the first to be fully covered with smooth, highly reflective limestone, making them clearly visible from space. The four shafts in the Great Pyramid in ancient times clearly showed, 4 constellations or stars back at the time of it’s building. These were: Sirius; Zeta Orionis, the brightest star of the Orion Belt; Alpha Draconis, and Beta Ursa minor. At the time these four stars were also the two equinoctial and the two-solstitial stars, aligning themselves at various times of the year with the Earth’s horizon. The three pyramids themselves were aligned perfectly with one of the easiest to find constellations in the night sky, the three stars of Orion’s Belt. Using the stars as markers aligned with the Earth one could easily find the pyramids. Once found and using two peaks in the Ararat Mountains that mimic perfectly the size and shape of the two bigger pyramids, an aircraft could triangulate position and fly straight up the center line of the perceived triangle to land safely on the long, flat, perfectly crafted landing strip in the mountains of Lebanon. Using a shortened triangulated formula, one also could find the post Diluvial spaceport, which lies directly on the same triangular median.

The bottom symbols of the design show the etymology of the word “god(s)” in ancient hieroglyphs. The very earliest symbol (to the left) resembles quite closely the symbol for star or planet, as it proceeds in age it comes much closer to the Christian symbol for God, the cross.

Hot Breath Magazine Party, Atlantic City, Oct 11, 2011

This was an event I helped put together at the Connoisseur Kulture Glass Blowing Trade Show in Atlantic City, NJ this past Oct. Hot Breath Magazine was releasing their upcoming first issue and was sponsoring an after part on the second day of the trade show. I helped my good friend Melissa Baer put together and art battle between myself and two other artists. The theme was Hot Breath.

In January, I participated in my second Artbattles event. Thanks to all my fans, family and friends who voted me into the top four of the online competition. That night I battled long time NYC live art scene veterans Danielle Mastrion and Pesu as well as artist Kevin Raggot for a chance to compete in Poland.

Good luck in Poland, Danielle! I know you will kill it!

Fools,” said I, “you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

ARTBattle Jan 27, 2012

On January 27 I competed in the Artbattle for Poland. The other three artists competing were Pesu , D. Mastrion , and Kevin Ragnott . It was a hot battle with a fantastic audience. Pesu and D. Mastrion’s fans really brought it, filling out the venue and chanting their names before the brushes even hit the canvases! Kevin and I had our camp followers as well. Thank you to everyone that made the journey to le poisson rouge that night as well as the over 2000 people who voted me into the battle! I really love this painting live gig and will be doing a weekly event at DIVA in SoHo on Tuesday nights.

So back to the battle! We all painted frantically having a bit less time then the normal 1.5 hours split between two sessions. Personally I felt all 4 of the paintings were super strong but veteran artbattler and live painter Danielle Mastrion took the night with her dynamic portrait of Robert DiNero in Taxi Driver. “Bang! Bang!”

Congratulations Danielle! Hold it down in Poland! (I’m also secretly thrilled the other lady won 😉 )

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – free tattoo designs

Posted in Community posts, tattoos with tags , , , , , , , on November 5, 2011 by threeerincadigan

So I’m a bit late on Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s actually October but I wanted to do something to recognize the disease this year. My amazing sister in law Mindy was diagnosed with breast cancer this past Spring and a close friend at the end of the summer. It’s a horrible feeling to hear the news about someone you love. Thankfully Mindy caught it early and is doing really well. Unfortunately thats not the case with my friend.

Mindy, my sister in law, is pretty great. Shes just a year older then me and looks fabulous. She has gorgeous red hair (which apparently is growing back splendidly after a summer of chemo) and probably weighs a buck ten sopping wet. I don’t know many people who handle life like she does, two cute and crazy kids, a dog, a husband, top of her career field selling insurance and still has time to have a little side business creating beautiful beaded jewelry. To say Mindy has her act together is putting it mildly. In fact she would be downright intimidating if she wasn’t so genuinely nice. I really lucked out getting her as a sister-in-law, we are very different on the surface with vastly different styles and interests. There was a possibility of just not being able to click but Mindy is so non judgmental, open and kind that our differences have never been an issue. She is always interested in what I’m doing and always has something positive to say. I really love her and am so happy to call her my friend.

LOVE!!!!!!

In September Mindy called looking for a favor. She had decided to celebrate life, turning 40 and getting a clean bill of health this fall by getting a tattoo. I was a bit surprised. Tattoos would be one of the difference in styles I’m talking about. But she wanted a tattoo and asked me if I would draw it for her. I, of course, was honored. She had the idea to add butterfly wings to the pink breast cancer ribbon. The butterfly a symbol of new life. It was a fantastic idea. I drew four different versions and of course she picked the simplest one with hearts on the wings. Mindy is not very flashy and she will be getting just about 1″ x 1″ tattooed version on the back of her neck.

We talked about the other three designs I drew this week and decided together that I should make them available for free download to anyone dealing with breast cancer in their life or the life of someone they love. They can be a symbol of survival, remembrance, fighting the fight or a celebration of life. Please feel free to down load the following images. I did a couple color samples to but it can be fun to add your own colors to personalize them. Please send me pictures if you’d like. I hope you enjoy them and wear them well.

Just click on the image and drag onto your desk top to save.

Health. Love. Happiness to you all.
