Breast Cancer Awareness Month – free tattoo designs

So I’m a bit late on Breast Cancer Awareness month. It’s actually October but I wanted to do something to recognize the disease this year. My amazing sister in law Mindy was diagnosed with breast cancer this past Spring and a close friend at the end of the summer. It’s a horrible feeling to hear the news about someone you love. Thankfully Mindy caught it early and is doing really well. Unfortunately thats not the case with my friend.

Mindy, my sister in law, is pretty great. Shes just a year older then me and looks fabulous. She has gorgeous red hair (which apparently is growing back splendidly after a summer of chemo) and probably weighs a buck ten sopping wet. I don’t know many people who handle life like she does, two cute and crazy kids, a dog, a husband, top of her career field selling insurance and still has time to have a little side business creating beautiful beaded jewelry. To say Mindy has her act together is putting it mildly. In fact she would be downright intimidating if she wasn’t so genuinely nice. I really lucked out getting her as a sister-in-law, we are very different on the surface with vastly different styles and interests. There was a possibility of just not being able to click but Mindy is so non judgmental, open and kind that our differences have never been an issue. She is always interested in what I’m doing and always has something positive to say. I really love her and am so happy to call her my friend.

LOVE!!!!!!

In September Mindy called looking for a favor. She had decided to celebrate life, turning 40 and getting a clean bill of health this fall by getting a tattoo. I was a bit surprised. Tattoos would be one of the difference in styles I’m talking about. But she wanted a tattoo and asked me if I would draw it for her. I, of course, was honored. She had the idea to add butterfly wings to the pink breast cancer ribbon. The butterfly a symbol of new life. It was a fantastic idea. I drew four different versions and of course she picked the simplest one with hearts on the wings. Mindy is not very flashy and she will be getting just about 1″ x 1″ tattooed version on the back of her neck.

We talked about the other three designs I drew this week and decided together that I should make them available for free download to anyone dealing with breast cancer in their life or the life of someone they love. They can be a symbol of survival, remembrance, fighting the fight or a celebration of life. Please feel free to down load the following images. I did a couple color samples to but it can be fun to add your own colors to personalize them. Please send me pictures if you’d like. I hope you enjoy them and wear them well.

Just click on the image and drag onto your desk top to save.

Health. Love. Happiness to you all.

Bicycle Tattoo: off the shirt onto the skin

Posted in tattoos with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 4, 2011 by threeerincadigan

This summer I was contacted by someone who purchased one of my Albert Hofmann “Bicycle” tshirts.  It’s a design I created for an event I threw out in San Fransisco in the summer of 2010. The event was called “Bicycle” and was a psychedelic art and music party. The featured artists included myself, Tripp Shealy, Alan Forbes, and Stanley Mouse among others. People loved the bicycle graphic with the fractal of LSD molecules and so when I decided to move forward with creating a full line of t-shirts I wanted it to be included in the first season. The man who contacted me had purchased the shirt and was wanting to know if I would mind if he had the design turned into a tattoo. I loved that he had the respect to ask. I also loved that he wanted to have a piece of my art inked onto his body for the rest of this life time. My response was to send him a high resolution image of the original drawing to make sure the tattoo was exact to my work.

This was early this summer and I had kind of forgotten about it. This past week I received an email with photos of the tattoo! And so I thought I’d share them with you. I’m really happy with the placement and likeness to my original drawing. I’m not sure of the exact shop he went to but the guy lives in Portland OR. I’ll find out and post a link.

EVENTS: Nov 6 Astoria Market

Posted in EVENTS with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 3, 2011 by threeerincadigan

THREE Erin Cadigan kicks off the holiday market season at Astoria Market this weekend. This market is quaint and filled with goodies, nestled in the lovely neighborhood of Astoria, Queens. The actually market is indoors, so it will be going on rain or shine (or, God forbid, snow!). The building is a terrific old Bohemian hall. Since 1910, Bohemian Hall has been a part of New York City history. Bohemian Hall is run and managed by the Bohemian Citizens’ Benevolent Society of Astoria, a fraternal organization dedicated to education and preserving the Czech and Slovak communities in the area. Like all great Bohemian Halls this one is located at the edge of a large outdoor beer garden serving beer and bratwurst since it opened its doors early last century.
So come for the hand crafted arts and stay for a hand crafted pint. There will be a raffle held by the Astoria Market team and free hot chocolate until it runs out. The giveaway/raffle is a beautiful ceramic vase handmade in Thailand by local artisans. This lovely piece was donated to Astoria Market by the great people at HandCrafting Justice.
The market is open from 12-6. It’s located at 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria, NY . Ity’s easily accessible by the Subway N or Q to Astoria Boulevard (second to last stop). Walk 1 block to the intersection of 24th Avenue and 31st Street. Bohemian Hall is located between 29th Street and 31st Street.
