On this upcoming August 18 designer Erin Cadigan will be competing against 3 other NYC artists in a live painting, Art Battle. Art Battles was started by  Sean Bono and Max Bode in the fall of 2000 as a way to bring the seemingly opposing styles of academic and street painting together. By creating live events where artists of different methodology could compete and show their skill, all forms of art could then be viewed as equally relevant. Focusing on emerging talent, Art Battles, has become a world wide platform showcasing some of the hottest cities on the planet’s hottest young artists.

The battle on August 18 is showcasing four artists that have never battled before: Erin Cadigan, Don RiMX, Nina Paints, and Skylerbreed. Each of these NY artists were hand picked by veteran Art Battle artists from the US team. The winning artist from this battle will be flown to Spain at the end of September to compete on the US team in a European battle.

How do i feel about all this? Honestly, nervous as hell and super excited. I have tried to get into a battle a couple  times over the past years since moving to Brooklyn in 2004. I think it’s pretty awesome to be accepted at a point where this has grown to become so well known and global. The judges had a few questions about my ability to translate my art from so design based to live panting but I assured them that everything I do is hand drawn. My main form of art for 15 years was painting but over time I have focused more and more on pen and ink, digital coloring and/or screen printing. So yes it has been a minute since I’ve painted on the regular but I think I’m up to the challenge. Just like riding a bike….plus I’m pretty good in front of a crowd, I did live custom sneaker painting on the streets of New york as part of Adidas’ Adi-Color campaign and last year I did live screenprinting at Webster Hall during a CMJ music event. Still nervous though, my competition seems to have painting on lock down and are damn talented.

MATH (skylerbreed)– Hails from East New York, Brooklyn. They do not mess around in East New York. Math is a self taught graffiti artist focusing on letter form and color. He tags under the acronym FR5 (Fresh5) and been doing it life long pretty much. Recently he quit his 9-5 to pursue his art career. For more on Math (skylerbreed) and to check his work click HERE.

NINA PAINTS–Lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her painting style fluctuates between figurative and abstract. Obviously influenced by the sights, sounds and colors of the large transplanted islands culture of her neighborhood, Nina combines slice of life imagery with bright colors, angled perspective and loud patterning to create vibrantly alive art. Check out Nina’s work HERE.

Don RIMX–Lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. His work is largely portraiture, in which he uses scale, color and proportion to engage the viewer in a narrative about the subject. RIMX aims ” to create a collectable line of art that function’s as part of global art history”. For more on Don RIMX and his work click HERE.

So that’s it. That’s the competition right there. Pretty solid. I think it’s going to be an amazing and challenging event. There’s a great mix of styles and talents. I’d like to thank artist, designer and Art Battles veteran, Andre Trenier, for personally hand picking me. I won’t let you down.

I’d also like to thank the other three Art Battle veterans, Marthalicia Mattarita, Max Bode, and Pesuart, for choosing my competitors. Let the games begin!
