COMMUNITY: Bushwick Five Points Festival

Posted in Community posts with tags , , , , , , on June 4, 2012 by threeerincadigan

This past Saturday was an amazing day. I moved into this area of Brooklyn a little over three years ago (Jefferson to the Myrtle-Wycoff on the “L” train). There was basically The North East Kingdom and Star Coffee shop. Not much else but 99cent stores and bodegas as far as the eye could see. My husband and I waited with baited breath both for Barcey’s Coffee to open a bit closer down to our place and The Bodega Bar to open right at the 5 points on St. Nicholas and Troutman. Now we got Pearls Bar, Cafe Ghia, Uri’s, and Hanna Market. Arts in Bushwick has been working hard to colonize the neighborhood as a place for artists for years. I’ve participated the past three during the Bushwick Open Studios festival. This year instead of hosting an open forum in my studio, I took part in the first year of the Bushwick Five Points festival down the block from my house. A local guy Joe whose family owns a bunch of buildings and land on the corners where St. Nich, Troutman and one small side street create a star intersection donated all his wall space to international graffiti artists. With the help of Brent, who lives in the lofts right there and Ben and Gina who own Bodega Bar on the corner, he threw an all day 10-8 FREE party for the community. Live bands and beer garden in the one open land triangle, graffiti murals being worked on all over, plenty of food trucks and local vendors. I was one of the vendors and also doing some live painting. It was gorgeous out and sunny, the streets were filled with hipsters, locals and families and plenty of Bushwick Open studio wanderers.

Hot Breath Magazine Party, Atlantic City, Oct 11, 2011

This was an event I helped put together at the Connoisseur Kulture Glass Blowing Trade Show in Atlantic City, NJ this past Oct. Hot Breath Magazine was releasing their upcoming first issue and was sponsoring an after part on the second day of the trade show. I helped my good friend Melissa Baer put together and art battle between myself and two other artists. The theme was Hot Breath.

Artbattle NYC, Jan 27, 2012

In January, I participated in my second Artbattles event. Thanks to all my fans, family and friends who voted me into the top four of the online competition. That night I battled long time NYC live art scene veterans Danielle Mastrion and Pesu as well as artist Kevin Raggot for a chance to compete in Poland.

Good luck in Poland, Danielle! I know you will kill it!

Fools,” said I, “you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

Love Save Japan, Times Square, NYC, May 5, 2012

Recently I participated in a charity event live in the middle of Times Square NYC! Put together by my friends and fellow artists, Pesu and Mariko Osanai to benefit Love Save Japan . All moneys made during the day from donations while we painted to sold paintings were sent to a childrens rescue in Japan through the Japanese American Lions Club. I only was able to be there half the day. I will be finishing my painting this Saturday June 2 at the Bushwick Five Points Festival. Money will be donated!

ARTBattle Jan 27, 2012

On January 27 I competed in the Artbattle for Poland. The other three artists competing were Pesu , D. Mastrion , and Kevin Ragnott . It was a hot battle with a fantastic audience. Pesu and D. Mastrion’s fans really brought it, filling out the venue and chanting their names before the brushes even hit the canvases! Kevin and I had our camp followers as well. Thank you to everyone that made the journey to le poisson rouge that night as well as the over 2000 people who voted me into the battle! I really love this painting live gig and will be doing a weekly event at DIVA in SoHo on Tuesday nights.

So back to the battle! We all painted frantically having a bit less time then the normal 1.5 hours split between two sessions. Personally I felt all 4 of the paintings were super strong but veteran artbattler and live painter Danielle Mastrion took the night with her dynamic portrait of Robert DiNero in Taxi Driver. “Bang! Bang!”

Congratulations Danielle! Hold it down in Poland! (I’m also secretly thrilled the other lady won 😉 )

COMMUNITY: Art Battles

On this upcoming August 18 designer Erin Cadigan will be competing against 3 other NYC artists in a live painting, Art Battle. Art Battles was started by  Sean Bono and Max Bode in the fall of 2000 as a way to bring the seemingly opposing styles of academic and street painting together. By creating live events where artists of different methodology could compete and show their skill, all forms of art could then be viewed as equally relevant. Focusing on emerging talent, Art Battles, has become a world wide platform showcasing some of the hottest cities on the planet’s hottest young artists.

The battle on August 18 is showcasing four artists that have never battled before: Erin Cadigan, Don RiMX, Nina Paints, and Skylerbreed. Each of these NY artists were hand picked by veteran Art Battle artists from the US team. The winning artist from this battle will be flown to Spain at the end of September to compete on the US team in a European battle.

How do i feel about all this? Honestly, nervous as hell and super excited. I have tried to get into a battle a couple  times over the past years since moving to Brooklyn in 2004. I think it’s pretty awesome to be accepted at a point where this has grown to become so well known and global. The judges had a few questions about my ability to translate my art from so design based to live panting but I assured them that everything I do is hand drawn. My main form of art for 15 years was painting but over time I have focused more and more on pen and ink, digital coloring and/or screen printing. So yes it has been a minute since I’ve painted on the regular but I think I’m up to the challenge. Just like riding a bike….plus I’m pretty good in front of a crowd, I did live custom sneaker painting on the streets of New york as part of Adidas’ Adi-Color campaign and last year I did live screenprinting at Webster Hall during a CMJ music event. Still nervous though, my competition seems to have painting on lock down and are damn talented.

MATH (skylerbreed)– Hails from East New York, Brooklyn. They do not mess around in East New York. Math is a self taught graffiti artist focusing on letter form and color. He tags under the acronym FR5 (Fresh5) and been doing it life long pretty much. Recently he quit his 9-5 to pursue his art career. For more on Math (skylerbreed) and to check his work click HERE.

NINA PAINTS–Lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her painting style fluctuates between figurative and abstract. Obviously influenced by the sights, sounds and colors of the large transplanted islands culture of her neighborhood, Nina combines slice of life imagery with bright colors, angled perspective and loud patterning to create vibrantly alive art. Check out Nina’s work HERE.

Don RIMX–Lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. His work is largely portraiture, in which he uses scale, color and proportion to engage the viewer in a narrative about the subject. RIMX aims ” to create a collectable line of art that function’s as part of global art history”. For more on Don RIMX and his work click HERE.

You can click HERE to see my bio and work on the Art Battles site.

So that’s it. That’s the competition right there. Pretty solid. I think it’s going to be an amazing and challenging event. There’s a great mix of styles and talents. I’d like to thank artist, designer and Art Battles veteran, Andre Trenier, for personally hand picking me. I won’t let you down.

I’d also like to thank the other three Art Battle veterans, Marthalicia Mattarita, Max Bode, and Pesuart, for choosing my competitors. Let the games begin!
